TWAIN is an interface used to import from imaging devices, such as scanners. For more information, see the TWAIN Working Group's website at www.twain.org. The Photoshop TWAIN plug-in connects with compatible devices that are installed on your computer.

If you are not sure whether your scanner is TWAIN compliant, you can use TWACKER, a tool developed by the TWAIN Working Group, to verify it. TWACKER can be downloaded here: TWACKER 32 bit TWACKER 64 bit. After installation: Launch the program. Click menu File-Select Source and select your device in the ‘Select Source’ list.
The TWAIN Plug-in provided on this page is NOT compatible with Photoshop CC 2015.5 and later on Mac OS.
Due to limitations with TWAIN in Photoshop, we strongly suggest the following alternatives for scanning your images:
Use the stand-alone scanning software included with your scanner
Most scanners provide a stand-alone scanning application that can be used to scan and save images.
Using the stand-alone scanner software avoids issues associated with TWAIN. Using a dedicated application to scan allows you to retouch and edit images in Photoshop while you scan in the background – which can be more efficient.
If you use a stand-alone scanning application, save your scanned images as TIFF files, then open them into Photoshop.
Instructions: Scan and import images from a separate scanning application

Some scanner software lets you designate Photoshop as the external editor for an image after a scanning is completed. Consult the documentation that came with your scanner or contact your scanner manufacturer for more details.
Mac OS:
Use Apple’s ImageKit technology instead of TWAIN to scan directly into Photoshop. Support for ImageKit is built
Instructions: Scan and import images using Apple’s ImageKit interface (macOS only)
Windows:
Use the WIA (Windows Image Acquisition) interface for your device, if it’s available, to scan directly into Photoshop.

Contact your scanner manufacturer for more information on scanning using ImageKit or WIA.

When you use TWAIN to import from an imaging device, you may encounter these issues:
- Photoshop or your scanner application freezes or quits unexpectedly.
- You are unable to close the scanner window.
- You encounter errors during import.
- The preview of the imported image, or the imported image itself, appears incorrect onscreen.
Try the following solutions:
Download the latest scanner driver from your scanner manufacturer’s website and install the driver. Be sure to confirm the driver is compatible with the version of the Operating System on your computer.
Use a dedicated third-party scanning application
If your scanner manufacturer doesn't provide updated drivers that are compatible with current operating systems you may need to look at third-party scanning solutions. These third-party utilities are dedicated scanning solutions, and they are more appropriate for critical or high-volume scanning.

I'm using this example for scan twain .NET TWAIN image scanner
But when I try running my project on a 64-bit system, its giving me this error:
An attempt was made to load a program with an incorrect format. (Exception from HRESULT: 0x8007000B)
According to many searches that I have made, I found the twaindsm.dll. I tried to import itbut the system becomes stuck.
Twain Driver 64 Bit Scanner Windows 7
I tried to build the project in 32-bit, and that didn't worked either.
Any help?

Twain DLL are for 32 bit system wich basicly wont work on 64 bit.
Flexo♦You can find the 64 bit version of the TWAINDSM DLL. While installing your application make sure this DLL is in the same folder as your exe and make sure you load this manager.
In 64 bit systems the default twain32 dll sits under C:Windows. Hence when the TWAIN app loads this module it loads the 64 bit version. Always the best way to avoid DLL resolution conflicts with TWAIN is to port your DSM as part of it. That way it works everywhere.
Change Platform target to x86 from project properties.

Agree, this is the cause of the problem.
Here is the solution: Access Scanners from 64bit Applications
Asprise Scanning C# VB.NET TWAIN WIA Scan SDK is probably the only scanning library that works for both 64bit and 32bit applications thanks to the innovative patent pending technology and quality implementation.
You may obtain the library from NuGet directly:
Install-Package asprise-scan-scanner-twain-wia-api
