Solaris 8 Iso

In 2001, Sun issued a preview release of the open-source desktop environment GNOME 1.4, based on the GTK+ toolkit, for Solaris 8. Solaris 9 8/03 introduced GNOME 2.0 as an alternative to CDE. Solaris 10 includes Sun's Java Desktop System (JDS), which is based on GNOME and comes with a large set of applications, including StarOffice, Sun's office suite.

Sun has released Solaris 10 CDs for free usage / download. Now on the oracle site I can't find them. Where can I find Solaris 10 for Sparc 64bit? I have Sun Blade 1500.

Oracle doesn't offer the CD images any more, it seems, but they do have a DVD image for download. You can either hook a DVD drive to your Blade, or mount the DVD on another system and install from net.

Did the Blade 1500 come with a DVD-rom already? http://www.oracle.com/technetwork/server-storage/solaris10/downloads/index.html

I have Solaris 8 OS installed in French.

Is it possible to switch from French to English without reinstalling the OS ? If yes how ?

When locale -a i have this :

Even when I try to edit /etc/default/init with :

and reboot : nothing happens.

To verify the result i always use date and when i reboot : i also have the date in french.

To switch to the US locale, open with an editor the file named .dtprofile present in your home directory and add this line at the end:

or better:

The desktop, shell and all applications should be displayed in English after the next login.

lang setting is done by LANG var.

to change for current session just enter

for instance (didn't have french installed, so I use portugese)

  • to change only for root, edit .bashrc for root, reconnect.
  • to change for all users, edit /etc/login (or /etc/profile )
  • to change at system level try editing /etc/defaults/init, and reboot.

  • by edit, I mean add the two lines in the file.
